The Gulf War began 2 August 1990 and ended 28 February 1991. This conflict was known as Operation Desert Storm.

The "second" Gulf War began with the invasion of Iraq on 20 March 2003. This was known as Operation Iraqi Freedom. Victory over the Iraqi forces was announced officially on 1 May 2003. Technically this was the end of the Iraq war. What we are doing now is peace keeping and rebuilding.

While in Iraq, we are continuing a global conflict called the war on terror. We are basically seeking and drawing out terrorist cells and eliminating terrorist insurgents long enough to get Iraq on their feet with a stable Government. So, the Iraq war technically ended in May of 2003. We are no longer fighting an Iraqi Government or Army. It can not correctly be called the Iraq war any longer.

As far as the Why's and How's, I believe you should research the topic and find out for yourself. And please stay away from the conspiracy theorists. They will give you all kinds of garbage to chew on. Stick to the KNOWN facts. Read the document done by the 9/11 commision and other unclassified documents available to you.

Have fun.
