I, for one, am an interior designer with a penchant for ceiling fans and even have them in almost every room in my home. I've used them for years because we are located in a dry almost desert like climate and without ceiling fans our electric bills would look more like a mortgage payment.
That being said, I have found many elegant ceiling fans that can match almost any decor and price point. Since they come in every imaginable finish and wood tone, there is certainly an optically pleasurable option available. Granted, there are a lot of cheesy looking ones available at the discounters. But, I've even installed one on my covered patio that everyone who see it finds it attractive.
I have found installing them with ceiling medallions that coodinate with the fan is a most elegant presentation. But, then again, I've only been in business 30 years...

A decorator only gives you ideas my friend, if you want or need a ceiling fan then have one. Alot of times these decorators come into my clients homes, have them paint and decorate the way they like it and after a few days my clients hate it so no matter what, it's your home and your the one that is there all the time so put the fans where you want, paint the walls the colors YOU like and enjoy. Plus you get the credit, it's your taste not some one else's.

I used to laugh about that all the time when I watched Trading Spaces. Everytime a room had a ceiling fan, I would say, "Well, the ceiling fan will be ditched." I guess they really aren't that pretty (even the nice ones aren't all that pretty), but if you live in a place without air conditioning, they are absolutely necessary. I wish those shows would think about that before getting rid of the ceiling fan!

I'm an interior designer and I ask the same question. There are plenty of places where a ceiling fan is a benefit, like where I live in the desert Southwest. I just choose a more elegant fan, and there are plenty of them out there. If your designer doesn't agree with you, maybe you need to find a designer who takes your wishes to heart...it's your house.

Its all about money...if the designer can get the homewoner to ditch the fan they will probably talk them into some ridiculously expensive chandelier, or in the case of Trading Spaces, make some hideous thing to hang in its place. Remember one thing about most designers, they do not pay your utility bills. Ceiling fans serve a very specific energy wise purpose and can save you lots of money when heating or cooling your home. There are a lot of fans on the market that are very beautiful and can fit the decor of any almost any home.

On TV, it's all about image. They don't like anything blocking their designs. An example is if they hang up a surfboard and the image of the surfboard is blocked by the ceiling fan when they pan the finished room.
