I made a bet with one of my friends that i could run a faster mile than him. I need to train myself to run faster than a 6min mile in one month (I can run a 8 min mile pushing myself). If i lose this bet i have to dye my hair black......HELP! How should i train to accomplish this goal?

Okay so the guy that made the bet with me changed the time i thought i only had a month to train to run a mile in 6 minutes but he changed it to 2 months. I have to dye my hair black if i lose and I dont know what he has to do yet. So now that the time that i have to train has changed any other suggestions? Also any suggestions on what his consequence for losing should be? Thanks for all the suggestions!

*Healthy eating.
*Get a comfortable pair of running shoes to train in (and if you are racing on the track, a good pair of spikes).
*LOTS AND LOTS of repeats and sprint intervals.
*Hill running.
*Long Runs (of up to 5 miles).
*Tempo running - practice running at 6 minute mile pace - no faster, no slower. See you long you can sustain it. The fitter you become, the longer you will be able to sustain it.
*Mental training - run hard, and train yourself to go through the pain barrier, and resist the urge to just quit. Play the race in your mind. Imagine yourself running a 6 minute mile (or quicker), and how you plan to do it.
It will be tough for you to drop 2 minutes off your time in a month. I remember when I was 16, I reduced my 5k road best from about 19 minutes to 15:21, and the only training I ever did was 2 5 mile runs flat out.
Also if you are undertaking intense training, my advice would be to carry on training after this race, but alternate how much you are running each week, so you aren't simply increasing mileage by massive amounts, therefore increasing the risk of overtraining syndrome. Also, try and run on a track and grass, so that you are not just training on the road, and constantly pounding the joints.
Hope this helps. Please let us know your progress, and the outcome. Good luck!

Wow wow wow! Just wait a minute- this guy above me "creed4545" or something, don't you listen to him! I honestly think you can take 2 minutes off your mile time. I dropped from maybe an 8:30 to around a 6:45 in the first month or so of cross country that I did- and I know anyone, if they really try, could've improved more than me. If you work hard enough you can most certainly run a 6 minute mile!
The most important thing is your mental attitude- you need to want to run! If this is true, then you will train better, be more motivated to eat right and get sleep, and overall this will be a better experience. Plus you're gonna cream this guy!!
Run like the wind!!!
I guess you could make him shave his head, but hey, you be creative and come up with something good that he'll have to do when you beat him.

I never try to discourage anyone but that much time to drop in that short of time will not be done unless you are superhuman. Think about it. Oylmpic athletes dont drop time like that training for a major/life changing event(olympics/world championships) after training for years in the best physical condition, with amazing coaches, proper diet, training facilities, great equipment what makes you think youre gonna do it. What physical level are you starting from, have you been training up to this point or trying to do it after not doing anything for months.
I say pick the shade of black now, cause youll be dyeing your hair
Next time bet something you have a realistic chance of winning.

depending on how much time you have I would suggest some distance runs 3 to 5 miles everyday until the race. A six minute mile is pretty fast for a girl

you will have to run and stretch a lot. and drink a lot of water. i think there are diets you can do that will help with running. when i was in cross country a few years ago, the fastest mile i ever did was 6min 18secs. i think itll be really hard, but there is hope.
what does the guy have to do if you win???

unless you are superman and superfast i wouldnt bet on it.
for the mile it can take three months to drop 30 seconds.
2 minutes might not sound like a lot but its a ton of time for a mile.

dropping 2 minutes off your mile is like dropping 60 pounds.
feasible? yes.
in one month? wellllllllllllll i dont know.
i would say run. frequently. and attempt to better your time every single day. even by seconds is a great thing.

Eat very healthy, run everyday, and do some strength training.
Most importantly though: warm up and get a GREAT STRETCH and run lots of stairs or hills if you only have a short period to get your legs into shape.
