You really want to discourage it but it shouldn't cause problems.

Whether it's bad for him or not, you should probably let him know that it's not acceptable behavior on his part. You shouldn't have to hide things around your house so your dog doesn't get into them, I don't particularly agree with that method. It doesn't train the dog, it just keeps things out of the minds eye. Not particularly effective. Instead, leave paper lying around and wait for him to approach it. When he does, touch him on the neck to redirect his attention and tell him No, in a calm yet assertive voice. Naturally this won't work by just doing it once. Dogs learn by repetition. Soon enough he'll realize that the shredding of paper is unacceptable to you and he'll stop. However, on the other side of the spectrum. Dogs can also tend to do these sort of negative behaviors when they're lacking something. Normally, a lack of proper exercise is the reason. Even if you walk your dog daily, some require more. Perhaps walking isn't enough? Where I don't know your dog specifically, nor the habits you practice around him, it would be hard to say. In any case. Maintaining the presumption that the dog is exercised properly, then the basis for his behavior lies souly on the fact that he hasn't been properly trained. The question you should be asking isn't whether it's good for the dog or not, physically it may be ok, but mentally, it's not a good habit. The question you should be asking instead, is how to get him to stop. Negative behaviors, if not corrected, can and in most cases will progress into more and sometimes worse negative behaviors. It's important to be able to control your dog in every aspect of the way it lives. For your dogs sake, learn.

Keep a watch on his feces - if he is constipated over the next day or so or has diarrohea then take to vet and tell them what has happened incase he has a partial or total blockage of intestines.
However I suspect that he should be fine as paper will mulch down and get digested to a certain degree by the stomach acids.

You should not allow it to eat paper as it contains chemicals which are injurious in the long run. Try to keep paper and especially your home works away from your pet's reach and if you think that you will forget these things away from him, then write in your room on a placard in BOLD "KEEP AWAY PAPER, ETC"
