Actually in the States Budweiser only became the most popular in the 1970s. Before then it was Schliz. But then Schlitz changed its brewing practice to save money and the taste changed. The brand fell like a rock and was decimated, replaced by Bud whose incredible marketing and advertising budgets kept it there for the States and also attacked many other markets worldwide. Bud has actually lost share in the States over the past couple of years but continued to make inroads elsewhere.

Budwieser has an interesting history. Did you know that it was originally a very "Heavy" darker beer prior to WW2? It was very much like a Samuel Adams recipe. When World War 2 started, and many men were off to war women made up most of our work force (i.e.-"Rosie the Riveter") well Budwieser devised a plan to make a lighter, more "champagne-like" refreshing beer that they could sell to women, and it was a hit!
They achieve much of this pale character by using rice as an adjunct fermentable, instead of grains for their malt.
While I still like a heavier style beer personally, there's nothing like a "Cold Bud" on a hot summer day!
No doubt, good marketing is a key contributer, but I think the American public has been raised on the notion that "Bud" is truly "America's Beer" and generations of loyalty keep it at the top of the list!

Anheuser Busch had a great distribution system in prior to and just after prohibition (They are still the best distributor within the United States). They kept their brewmasters up to date by sending them to Europe to work for foreign brewers during this time.
As prohibition was ending they ramped up their operation quickly and effectively and even sent FDR a case of beer as a 'thanks'
They were in a better situation than other breweries that did not keep up with developments in brewing.
They could get their product across the county amazingly quickly and usually beat out local brewers as a result.
There's more than one simple reason why they have become the largest (not necessarily the best) brewer in the US.

They are good at marketing. I do like bud lite, but prefer the cost of natural light. :) Geeze, less marketing, and cheaper.
