They both brainwash thier members into doing absolutely anything thier leaders say, and that involves killing members of other groups if necessary.

They both satisfy deep rooted human urges to be tribal, to be a group with shared hopes and to defend thier beliefs from other groups. Both groups need to create an atmosphere of general fear to promote thier own worth - meaning that people are more likely to join the military or a religion when they feel under threat, and that is why we tend to live in a climate of fear in western society as it suits both politicians and religious leaaders to peddle the idea that we are on the edge of some kind of apocolypse.

Not sure whether this is on the same lines as your own thinking. Perhaps you could give us an idea of your thoughts?

Military: Wouldn't exist in a perfect world, but very necessary given the state of the world.

Religion: Wouldn't exist in a perfect world and totally unnecessary in ours too.
