There is no fast way to becoming a good bartender. You have to work your way up. While i was in college, I started out as a door man, then barback, daytime bartender and finally peaktime bartender. Many bars won't hire you if you've gone to some kind of bartenders school. Those schools teach you very formal, ineffective means on bartending.
Anyone can sling cocktails, being mixing drinks is only 33% of the job. You should be a quick thinker and a type-A personality. You have to be nice, but not a pushover, and you have to be able to know when NOT to serve someone.
It's fun, but it won't happen overnight.
Also, be ready for late nights and a lot of smoke.

Ive worked in bars as cocktail waitress, bartender and bouncer. Best advice I can give you is fill out an app somewhere and hope you get the job. LOL. It can seem intimidating at first but you get used to it really quick and learn really fast. To start all you really need to know is your basics. How to pour beer, popular shots and drinks and how to make them. Dont waste your money on bartending schools. If you are looking at getting into flare bartending all you need to do is get some liquer bottles and fill them up with colored water and practice, practice, practice!!! Also, check out your local book stores. The sell pleanty of recipe books for bartending that also teachyou about different glasses, mixes and garnishes. You can make alot of moeny if you get in with the right place. Good Luck.,

when i started bartending i had a network of friends who owned bars and so i got the chance to start off behind the bar being the bar ***** and moved on from there. I was bartending in about a month, i am being generous with the time since i already knew how to bartend (from having a long history in the restaurant/bar business) i had to work on my speed and making shooters. and yes if you are good your tips rule.

Memorize the contents of drinks and shots.

They can make really good money at busy places.

Most restaurants and bars will look for people with experience already or, heaven forbid, a bartending college.

It's best to start off as a barback, then work your way up to bartender.

The best would be to take a bartending course. However, some smaller bars and restaurants will train you. Read up on the popular drinks and then the clientele and boss will help you along.

I have been in the biz for 19yrs now. The best advice I can give is on the job experience. Don't shell out $$$ for a bar tending class. They are a waste. Most owners/managers wont even give a call back if you have that on your resume. Apply @ a neighborhood bar as a server, cook, door person or bar back & work your way in. Learn from the veteran tenders there. Yes lots of $$ to be maid if u have what it takes. Good luck

Go to a bar where you are known and get a tab. Run the tab extremely high and tell the owner you will work off the tab by tending bar.
