Is it better to go with Fedora and Red Hat, or could I just go to Distrowatch and download w/e knock off version they have and do the same thing? (Keep in mind that I'm a n00b at the whole Linux thing.) The Idea of buying Fedora Core 6 or one of the Red Hat Versions is kind of not what I want to do, but if I have to do that to get the better product, I will.

The problem with answering the Linux question is that there are so many different distributions, and so many different ways to use a computer. I recommend you use the Linux Distribution Chooser (http://www.zegeniestudios.net/ldc/)........ This will ask you a series of questions in many different areas, after which a few distributions will be recommended. I think you will be better served by the Distribution Chooser than if each of us just recommends our favorite flavor of Linux.

I have been using Slackware for a number of years now.

But if you are a newbie and do not want to dive right into command line arcana then perhaps Redhat is the best.

Slackware is a more barebones distribution at least as far as setup utilities go. In a way that is a good thing since it forces you to learn a lot about linux.

nicely, Fedora is unfastened, RedHat isn't anymore...even though it comes with help. they're very comparable as Fedora is derived from RedHat and as a twin-boot installation on a pc you likely do no longer decide to pay money...you additionally can decide to look at different thoughts like Ubuntu or maybe stay-disks such as Knoppix or domestic dog Linux; they run thoroughly of a CD and don't play around with something. cheers, Rolf
