measure around the widest part of your calf... keep in mind that if there's an elastic stip down the length, they'll stretch (like the ariat all around half chaps... that's what I have) but if you buy an all leather type half chap, they probably won't. I was concerned that I needed an XL because of the width of my calf, but I can wear jeans and I still fit into the L.

About the height: sit down and measure from your heel up the back of your leg to the underpart of your knee... where your leg bends. I got the L short size because I needed the L for my calf, but I have a really short leg, so I didn't need the extra inch... but if you get chaps that are a little too tall it won't matter much... mine are still a little tall, but they just bunch up a little bit around my ankle, a lot like my show boots do.

So sit barefoot and measure up the back of your leg from the floor until the bend in your knee for the height and measure around the widest part of your calf for the width.
