I am a police officer with over 30 years working law enforcement.

As a police officer, not only must I abide by the laws established by my state but also those laws established by our Constitution.

In law enforcement there are several issues in the constitution that regulate our activities. One of the most common is the right against self incrimination or the 5th Amendment to the Constitution. Known by the public as ones "Miranda Rights" this particular right allows a suspect certain protections.

Another area is the 4th Amendment to the Constitution which requires the use of a search warrant in order to enter a home for legal purposes of finding evidence of a crime.

Good law enforcement starts with good laws! The sad part about our legal system is how stretched the laws have become by lawyers who twist and turn our constitution despite the true meaning meant by our forefathers. Because of this, some might say that criminals have more rights than victims.

None the less....our system of checks and balances is what we have and use. Hopefully our society as a whole will win over the injustices and right will overcome wrong despite this twisting of the judicial system!

Best wishes!

What I've noticed is that there are many people who don't know what the Constitution is, nor can they name any of the articles or amendments which means that as enforcers of the Constitution they don't know what they are enforcing. Law Enforcement should not only know about but be able to practice enforcement of the articles such as being current on search and seizure decisions, right to counsel, and even outside of Law Enforcement, it's just important to know about the rich history we have, when women's suffrage came about, civil rights, inalienable rights we all share. It's also important to know when the government is attempting to hedge on those rights. If you don't know or understand them, then you won't know when they are being infringed. We sit on the sidelines far too long letting outer people be involved in our political process instead of being learners and doers.
