That can be found in Inwood (Far north Manhattan) or in parts of Brooklyn and Queens. I don't reccomend the Bronx.
Actually, what you should do (and I reccomend this to everyone) is sublet a room or an apartment for a few months while you look for a place. I used to be (sort of still am) a rental agent and people get very discouraged at the cost and haste involved in renting a place in NYC.
Also, if you find a place for $780 a month, you found the needle in the haystack. Nothing in the city rents for less than $1000 a month, unless you are in the Bronx, or you killed an old lady and took her rent-controlled place. Those days are gone.
If you need a place fast, you'll have to pay a broker's fee plus 2 months rent and security, and that's going to total about $6000.
If you sublet for a while, you'll have time to really look, and maybe find a no-fee place you really like.
Email me if you want the scoop. Lots of rental agents are liars and hustlers.
$1200 might get you a decent studio in Manhattan.

look in the village voice, or craig's list. again and again people tell me that is where they found their apartments. you've got to be fast though, speed is essential when apartment hunting in nyc.
