I think you should dress to fit wherever you are going. If it's casual then be casual, but if it's nicer than dress nicer. If you're clean and presentable it doesn't really matter what you wear. If you go out and your fingernails are really dirty and your hair isn't combed and your clothes look dirty or stained, that gives a bad first impression. You don't have to look like you're going to the red carpet, but at least have some decency. and yes personality matters more, but first impressions do make a difference.

I think looks are important in getting to that first date, unless it's a blind date. Looks are very important at the beginning of the relationship because that initial attraction is what drives people to start that relationship and to want to spend time together. Once you get to know someone, you may find that you are attracted to them on a deeper level. You will have a chance to get to know their heart, kindness and warm personality. But without that initial attraction you may never get to that point.

First impressions are very important. If I'm not at all attracted to a guy I'm not going to want to go out with them again.
