Okay, I have a white dog named Buddy, and he used to be VERY white. Not one spot on him was a different colour other than the pink tinge of his paws. However, he is rusting. Around his eyes, paws, and mouth (mouth and eyes mostly) he is turning a reddish - brown colour. I was readign about mice and they release this chemical from glands when they are stressed, but believe me this dog has NOTHING to be stressed about.

Please help me find out why my dog is turning brown... He used to be so cute all white and fluffy, and now I don't know what is happening!

Thank you so much!
Anthony

If it is a puppy it is probably just shedding his puppy fur. My Golden retriver mix was completely black and white (her mom was a golden the dad was a stray) and as she got older she turned more golden. Now her head that use to be all black with a white stripe on her nose is now all golden with a whtie stripe on her nose and a black back. A lot of times white dogs have streaks where their tears run and that can stain them. I would ask your vet about it because they can make sure it isnt a more serious problem or recommend a product to help. I know there is a product for tear stains but I dont remember what its called. Hope this helps. Good luck

you didn't tell us what breed your dog is. My guess if he is white, he could possibly be poodle, maltese, bichon frise or llasa apso, or have parentage from these breeds. If this is the case, these breeds are reknowned for tear and beard stains. I own 2 bichons, and my youngest ones has severe tear stains. I am currently keeping them in check using a product called Angel's glow. It is available through their web site or e-bay.

My oldest bichon has a severe allergy to fleas and will bite herself raw, leaving a rust colored mark in the area that she has open sores. I frequently bathe her with flea shampoo and apply a dose of frontline once a month, even though it is winter and there is snow on the ground, she still manages to pick up fleas from somewhere. None of my other dogs have any fleas, and currently she is flea free. She has a large brown patch on her back near her tail, that I am waiting for her hair to grow out so I can cut it. But that will wait, because at the moment she is nursing a litter, and I won't bathe her for another 2 weeks, when the pups will be 4 weeks old. I don't want to confuse them by changing their mommy's scent.

some things to try, before you introduce an anti-biotic to him is diligently wiping his face down with baby soap, so you don't sting his eyes. Their are products available at the pet stores that claim they will eliminate tear stains, but I have had no luck with these. Make sure you have the vet check to make sure their isn't any infection going on, and see if he/she has any solutions. Avoid peroxide or bleach as these are harmful and will make the fur in this area porous and brittle. Some people suggest adding vinegar to their drinking water, to change the PH, and make sure your Buddy is drinking and eating from stainless steel bowls, not plastic or ceramic. Another thing I heard, but have not tried is adding a tums to their drinking water. This also changes the ph, and adds calcium to their system. Please ask vet about that one though, as I am not to sure that calcium is good for dogs.

Sometimes dogs can turn a reddish/brown from excessive licking. The reddish/brown change on his face could be from excessive tearing from the eyes. Dogs who have excessive tearing and lick their paws tend to have allergies. Consult your veterinarian about possible allergies. Watch your dog to see if he is chewing or licking at his feet, and look to see if his eyes are watery.

If you need to consult a veterinarian about possible allergies.

If he is a puppy then he is getting his adult fur. Some dogs gain/loose a color when they grown. If he's a adult then I don't know the cause maybe a vet could tell you.

Maybe he's getting too much iron in his diet. (Sorry, I couldn't resist)
