I heard that it's a laser whitening. Is that true?

Hi there,

Based on my experience, laser teeth whitening (i.e. Zoom) or light whitening (BriteSmile) are not only the most effective way to whiten teeth, but the safest. I've had BriteSmile and loved it. The reason why most people have a better time with chair-side treatments is because the solution sits on your teeth and gums for an hour tops, and you shouldnt have to get another treatment for at least 1-1 1/2 years, and up to 3 years, just depending on your eating/drinking habits and oral hygeine. I tried using those Rembrandt trays that you leave in for 30 minutes to an hour, but they really irritated my gums after a while and started affecting the nerves in my teeth, making them sensitive to hot and cold stuff. Usually you'll get a bleaching pen after treatment for a touch up, but you shouldn't have to worry about maintenance, it's really up to you. If you notice them getting a little duller, there are often pastes and pens offered by the manufacturer that your dentist will give you.

Bottom line, I found laser to be a lot gentler on my teeth. The sensitivity only lasted a couple hours after treatment, they put a rubber dam around my gums so I didn't have to worry about the blistering/irritation I got with the trays, and there's no maintenance. Check out the links below to research the procedures and to find cosmetic dentists in your area.

Whitening processes such as the Zoom process done by dentists are the most effective but can be expensive. It is not harmful but can cause tooth sensitivity for awhile.

Crest White Strips use the same whitening chemicals as dentists but at a lower dose. They are much cheaper. They also can cause sensitivity, but because the dose is lower, it won't be as bad.

Whitening toothpastes don't do much, but will help keep your teeth whiter once you get them where you want to be.

What I have heard to try first is to get a regular dental cleaning and then follow up with the Crest White Strips. If you still aren't satisfied with the results, then see your dentist about professional whitening.

Bozema has a very good answer. To answer the light question... There are lights, like the Zoom, and also lights are available at Walmart. However, studies have shown no sig difference b/w using lights or not. I think using Crest white strips from your dental office or Walmart will be your best bet. Also, if you are going to be using whitening strips or gels, don't use whitening toothpaste at the same time. Pastes have abrasives to remove stain to make teeth whiter, but when bleaching, your dentin tubules are open (uptakes the bleach) and the abrasive makes your teeth even more sensitive. I suggest Crest Pro Health toothpaste to reduce sensitivity.

Laser whitening or in house bleaching is good, but you have no control on how white your teeth will actually be once finished.
I always picture the episode of Friends-where Ross bleached his teeth and they were glowing in the dark because they were sooooooooooooo white.
Home bleaching is also good, just requires the dentist to take impressions of your upper and lower teeth and get bleaching trays made up, you then take the bleaching kit home and apply the bleaching agent into the tray and wear the trays in the comfort of your own home, you normally get a shade guide with the kit and once your teeth are the shade you want them to be simply stop using the kit.
Just be careful of the kinds of food and drink you consume whilst bleaching, such as tea, coffee, tobacco, red wine, even curries, as these stain the teeth .

Commercial tooth whiteners use hydrogen peroxide and
are expensive and inconvenient. A cheap and natural
tooth whitening home remedy uses few strawberries
but certain precautions have to be taken.

Go Smile is an at home use product that is safe and effective (and MUCH less expensive).

You can buy it at department stores, online, some beauty supply stores or salons carry it as well.
