On one particular morning he was justified, though. The train left on time for the one hour journey and it arrived 5 minutes late. However, Mr. Grumper's watch showed it to be 3 minutes early, so he adjusted his watch by putting it forward 3 minutes. His watch kept time during the day, and on the return journey in the evening the train started on time, according to his watch, and arrived on time, according to the station clock. If the train traveled 25 percent faster on the return journey than it did on the morning journey, was the station clock fast or slow, and by how much?

ANSWER : The station clock is 3 minutes fast. The morning journey took 65 minutes, and the evening journey therefore took 52 minutes, and the train arrived 57 minutes after it should have left, that is, 3 minutes early.

The train left for a one hour trip in the morning and arrived 5 minutes late.

So the morning trip took 65 minutes.

The return journey in the evening was accomplished at a speed 25% faster than in the morning. Since the distance was the same in each case, divide the time by 1.25 to get 52 minutes for the return trip.

Now let's propose some times to make the end analysis easier.

Let's say the train was scheduled to leave in the morning at 7 am and arrive one hour later at 8 am. It actually arrived at 805 am, 5 minutes late. Mr. Grumper's watch showed that it was 757 am at that time, and he thought it was 3 minutes early. So he advanced his watch to show 8 am (it was really 805) So his watch at this point was 5 minutes slow.

Now suppose the train were scheduled to leave for the return journey at 5 pm. The train started on time ACCORDING TO MR. GRUMPER'S WATCH. (5 minutes late in real time at 505 pm)

We have already determined that the trip went 25% faster, and took 52 minutes. So it would arrive at 557 pm. The station clock showed it to be on time, and thus showed 6 pm.

The station clock was 3 minutes fast.
