Other than slicing it open. I want to know how to choose good apples at the supermarket. Is there a fool-proof way to know whether or not they're good?

Selecting an Apple
1. Does it smell fresh? If it is waxed so heavily or so old you cannot detect even a faint aroma of apple, don't bother.

2. Is it heavy/dense for it's size and is it firm? i.e. No bruising, the flesh doesn't give with slight pressure from finger tips.

3. Look at the stem. It should be strong, not dry or withered. If the stem looks old or is missing, chances the apple has been picked off the tree a while ago.

Also, consider what is in season for your area. You can ask the produce manager what has just arrived and look in the food section of your local newspaper for articles about what is in season. Farmer's Markets are good place to go for seasonal, locally grown fruit. The shorter the transport time, the better.

baby gala apples are pretty much perfect. They're not too big, they don't get that weird gritty thing. I buy them from my super targets produce department. And I can tell you the Newmans Organic gala apples at my supermarket are always really old and buised so watch out for that.

Firm, no bruises or marks. Shinyness can be added at the store to make apples more appealing

Look for a hole. That means it's ripe and the worm already left.
