If I plan to work out at say, 5:00 pm and I ate carbs for breakfast and lunch (9 am and noon) are those carbs already turned to fat or are they still helping my energy?

The question, as always, is how much? You need a certain amount of fuel (food) for normal daily activities. If breakfast exceeded that amount, then it is well on its way to becoming fat by 5pm.

Lunch might be also depending on your conditioning level. Well trained athletes store more glycogen in their muscles than the average couch potato, so the answer is maybe, maybe not.

When I'm fueling for a race, I have something 90 minutes to 2 hours before.

i does no longer evaluate thoroughly ruling out carbs- that is termed a "fad" nutrition plan. Yeah i won't be able to disagree that the burden will come off yet once you've reached your purpose objective and that i'm guessing you'll end the nutrition plan yet then the burden will all come back on-even perhaps extra weight!! Sorry to might want to inform you this. in case you opt for to drop extra pounds then do exactly what you're doing now yet contain some carbs on your nutrition plan, then the burden will fairly stay off!!! sturdy luck!

depends on your matabolism if you work out on a regular basis don't worry about it if you're overindulging on the carbs try to cut back a little (maybe 1/2 a sandwich or whole grain breads -no 'white' is a good rule) ... have a good work out! i do it in the morning and eat carbs during the day and they don't turn into fat! you need fuel all day! it's the late nights that kill ya!
