You can get scratching posts with houses and toys and beds, which might make it more enticing. Spray cat nip on them, to make them extra tempting, and I suggest placing a few around the house. You can also buy scratching posts that lay on the floor, so this may help her feel familiar with it.
I also have come across this if you are worried about your furniture.

BUY A CAT CONDO!!! The Cat Condos that I have seen have a scratching post and 3 levels for the cat (2 cubby holes & a floor level). BUY A CAT BED or a small dog bed!!! It looks like a big fluffy square pillow. Your cat can lounge on both of these items and stay away from your leather couch. You might also want to put CAT NIP pouches by the Cat Condo and the bed to make him more comfortable. Also you can pet and brush him when he is using the Condo & the bed as a reward (if he wants some attention he will know he has to stay put). Find a good corner to put these items, give your cat some extra attention and you should be okay. Good Luck!!!

I had the same problem with my kitty, Precious, age 13. I inadvertently bought throw rugs with the rubber backing and there was her scratching post! After that I did not buy expensive rugs and she eventually quit scratching. Precious is very skiddish and not a very sociable cat to new people. I left her in the carrier for a couple of hours in the new house so she could see us moving around. When we did let her out we showed her the cat box and the master bedroom where she hid under the bed until that night and she then came out and checked things out. When we woke up she was snuggled up on the bed with us.
Actually, I had forgotton that I put out 2 litter boxes in different places in case she forgot where one was. Good luck and congratulations on your new home.

It will just take some time for him to get used to the new house, there really isn't much you can do to get him ready for a move, or get him used to it fast. But on the other hand just try to keep as much the same as possible. As far as scratching post, they sell standing posts in the pet section of most any supercenter and they also have ones that you can affix to corners of walls if he is looking for that vertical action. I hope this helps you out. Good luck with the move

Put him in a room separate from the furniture you don't want destroyed and get him a scratching post. Install some carpet if he refuses to use the post. Give him time to get used to the new house, too.

With an older cat it's easier to have a tall scratching post. I just recently(6 months ago) moved in to a new home, I found that my baby really likes her new scratching post, It goes from the floor to the ceiling with three layers where she can lay. to get her used to it I put her food bowl on the second layer it took her no time to figure it out. good luck.

I would buy several scratching posts and put catnip on them to get his attention. That way he will have plenty of places to scratch. And put them in separate rooms so he's got something everywhere he goes. To help him ger used to the new place, make sure you bring things of his that he is familiar with. if you had his food dish in the kitchen at the old house, put it in the kitchen in the new house. Make sure you leave blankets and things that he like to lay on out where he can get to them. Anything with yours and his scent on it will be helpful to him. (If you dn't mind, get some area rugs, they're as good as carpet.

I would recommend cutting his nails to reduce the need to scratch. You can try different types of scratching posts. My cat likes the corrugated cardboard ones.

just get a special rug made for scratching and place it in a room near yours. cover all your new furniture with lemon scented things, perhaps air fresheners in the rooms you DON'T want him in?? cats hate the scent of lemon for some reason. also, get double sided tape and stick it to furniture or on parts of the floor. cats also hate sticky things.
best of luck :-)
