The Alpha has a few advantages:
Image stabilization
Price
The D80 has a few advantages:
Industry standard (tons of accessories)
Best optics available for DSLRs
Nice setting LCD on top of camera
Dual thumbwheels for easy settings changes
So, my opinion is go with the D80, if you can afford it.

The D80 is a good camera. it works a lot better and seems to have more features than Sony.... Also, Nikon cameras are sturdier from my experience.

that's often interesting to to work out the uninformed "Sony sucks" comments from people who then flow directly to extol the virtues of Nikon. strange that considering the undeniable fact that Nikon use Sony synthetic sensors and image processors. What i could advise could variety counting on what you notice as an "intermediate" digicam. in terms of element and shoot compacts your budget certainly takes you to the top end of this section wherein case the undesirable guy is Nikon, as they desperately ought to replace their variety. in case you like a tremendous compact then Sony is the chief, yet Canon could desire to be the extra effective decision in case you want merely a tremendous-unfold sized compact. If on the different hand you're finding at "bridge" cameras then checkout the Sony DSC-HX1, the Panasonic DMS-FZ38, or the Fujifilm FinePix S200EXR. without understanding extra precisely your desires and needs it incredibly is confusing to refine the ideas any further.

Sony always use consumables that are exclusive to Sony ,like memory ,batteries, etc ..means you pay top dollar for bits and pieces Nikon every time...power and consumables come in compatibles which are cheaper to replace, apart from that Nikon is tops
