You can actually split the bulb into the cloves and plant them the same way you would an onion bulb. The garlic will grow and during the season will "go to seed" in which the top of the plant will begin to form bulbs . Let them get to a good size, then you can trim them off and plant them along side your others. If you do not use all of the garlic during the season, simply trim them off even with the ground before winter and they will come back again next year. Onions will do the same thing.

Most large grocery stores (Vons) carry elephant garlic. I was not impressed with the flavor... use good ol' reg garlic.
