My son has been sampling exotic fruit lately and asked me this. I thought it was a good question.

Certain fruits have a pit, such as peach, appricot, plum, and the seed is inside. The pit protects the seed till it gets to conditions that are right for it to start growing.
Other fruits have just seeds such as apple, grapes, pear, berries. These will grow with the right conditions. The fruit itself is the ovary where the seed develops. The fruit develops after fertilization in the flower.

Fruits With Pits

Mothers, don't let your sons grow up to be botanists!

Anyway, pits are the stony inner wall of some fruits (e.g., peaches). If you grind away at a peach pit, you will find the seed inside. Some Americans call seeds "pits," as in watermelons. What they really mean is "pips."

A Gerbil is a small mammal of the order Rodent. Once known simply as "desert rats", the gerbil subfamily includes about 110 species of African, Indian, and Asian rodents, including sand rats and girds, all of which are adapted to arid habitats. Most are primarily diurnal (though some, including the common household pet, do exhibit crepuscular behavior), and almost all are omnivorous.Since the gerbil is from the desert it Drinks less water and doesn't urine as much as the hamster. The Syrian or Golden Hamster, Mesocricetus auratus, is a very well-known member of the rodent subfamily Cricetinae, the hamsters. In the wild they are now considered vulnerable, but are popular as house pets and scientific research animals. Adults grow from 5 to 7 inches (12.5 to 17.5 cm) in length, and will usually have a lifespan of 2 to 3 years.Unlike the gerbil the hamster drinks more water and urine's more.
