I was living with my ex fiance' and during that time I bought him a german shepard puppy or so we thought... too me he looks like one but to some others they think that he is a Husky. The people I bought him from said he is a pure bred german shepard but they didn't get him AKC registered.. for the fact the mother had such a small litter I wouldn't think that would matter but maybe I am wrong so my question is...is there any Liver colored german shepards out there? that is his color liver color.

"The German Shepherd Dog varies in color, and most colors are permissible. Strong rich colors are preferred. Pale, washed-out colors and blues or livers are serious faults. A white dog must be disqualified" -That is the AKC breed standard.

"The blue and liver genes, once rare, now seem to have captured the imaginations of pet breeders, if my search of the internet is any indication. If otherwise well bred, they can be quite striking in appearance. They are not expressly forbidden, but the standard demands the nose leather be black, and these dilutions show blue and brown leather. The blue gene causes the black pigmentation in both hair and skin to turn steel grey, often very dark, while the tan ground remains much the same, or takes on a slightly silvery cast. The liver gene does much the same, turning black pigmentation brown. In both, the eyes take on a peculiar, silvery yellow colour. Both dilutions are simple recessives and can occur in all patterns, and when these recessives link, the result is the silvery fawn of the Weimaraner and Isabella Doberman Blues and fawns, according to Doberman breeders, tend to have poor hair coats, a good enough reason for culling them, but the so-called lethal gene once thought to be associated with liver appears not to exist. Blue, liver and white puppies should be placed in loving homes where they will be neutered and live as valued pets. Puppies should never be euthanized because of their colour." -http://www.shawlein.com/The_Standard/07_Colour_&_Pigment/Colour_&_Pigment.html

If they don't have papers on him then he very well could be a mix. Most breeders get the AKC reg for their dogs because then they can charge more for the puppies.

There are solid black german shepards and solid white ones. Basic colors are tan/brown with a black saddle. If there are liver color ones, its new to me, but I'm no expert. I've owned several german shepards, and I've never seen a liver colored one. Again, I'm no expert, but I did a lot of research before spending money on a german shepard pup instead of just adopting an adult when my last one passed away.

It could just be a poorly bred dog - that's not to say that he's not a good dog, or that there's anything wrong with him, but he may be the result of breeding two GSDs that weren't the best specimens of their breed.

Some GSDs look "liver" colored but are actually red and black.

Does it matter, as long as you like the dog?

You probably got him from a backyard breeder. in fact, I know you did. You most likely have a mix of something. You can look it up, go to german shepard dog websites or something. Backyard breeders don't care about dogs most of the time, they just want to get a quick buck.

Even if they didn't AKC register him, they still should have his breeding papers with his lineage. If you didn't get that from them, your pup isn't a pure bred!
