Seeing as a layer of paint actually takes up space can this ever occur or is it impossible? I really want to try this in a huge room and see the finished product as just a tiny crevice through a doorway.

No it wouldn't happen because the weight of the paint would not be able to stay on the wall and that's a fact jack!!!!

I am sure you could do it. The thing is, you would have to paint it like a million times to get the desired effect.
Take a 10x10 room, and say you put a 1/64 inch layer of paint on for each coat. You would have to paint a wall 64 times to equal 1 inch. A gallon of paint should cover two walls. Lets just say, to make things a little more simple, that you only paint two walls. if you have to paint a room 64 times to equal 1 inch, you would have to paint the same room 768 times to equal 1 foot. Now, on one wall, it should take approx 3840 coats of paint, for one wall to equal 5 feet, so double that, and you should be in the middle, however, you wouldn't be able to get past the 3000 coat, due to you having to go in and paint. So, with that, that would equal about 3000 gallons of paint.
Of course, this doesn't take into account if the paint thins during the drying process. Not to mention, pain would need to dry about 2 to 3 hours before applying another coat. Of course, it would take longer the smaller of space you would have to pain, since airflow wouldn't be as much, but it would take you about 563 days, painting 16 hours out of the day, without any breaks.
So, when you do this, let me know, I would love to see this done. See you in almost two years.

The answer is yes! Paint it a really putrid color and you wont WANT to enter it.
Seriously though, I imagine that it could happen but it would take thousands and thousands opf coats of paint.......youd probably run out of money long before the room was full!

My guess is you would die from paint fume inhalation first... but what the heck, life is short anyway... go for it!
