half of these people are retarded.

If you CEL (check engine light) goes on, take it to the dealer/autozone and get them to scan the codes. If its something serious, get it fixed. If not, then just get them to reset the ECU (will often fix the problem).

If it goes blinking, stop the car asap and get it towed to the shop. Dont drive on a blinking CEL, it has a high chance of damaging your car/being serious.

Sal is right, the Yaris has been doomed since day 1. Smart Money magazine gave it an overall rating of 2 stars, probably the lowest rating of anything ive seen in my life, awarding the Honda Fit sub-compact champion and the runner-up the Chevy Aveo sedan. You should take it to the dealer, even though they do nothing to help and tell you its fine, its still under warranty. Toyota is passing off junk now because they have a solid reputation. Test drive a Honda Fit, CHevy Aveo sedan, or Nissan Versa and you will see that.

If it is solid on, that means it isn't that much of an issue (could be anything). If it is blinking on and off, you should get to a repair shop or the dealer. Usually, only the dealer can reset your engine warning light with a special code.

If the check engine light is blinking, its generally a serious problem. Since you described it as a steady, unblinking light, you should be okay if were to drive it again. TAKE IT TO YOUR DEALER, they should be able to diagnose and fix the problem free of charge because the Yaris was introduced recently and you should have all this under warranty. I would be cautious if your dealer starts talking about expensive replacements because that's crap, you're under the Toyota warranty.

You need to get it to a dealer to get it checked out on their diagnostic machine. It will be safe to drive, if the car had a fault bad enough to affect it it would be in the "limp home mode" and you would notice the lack of power.
There's no much that really goes wrong with Yaris engine management, so there's no real common faults as such.

I had this symptom, and it turned out to be a faulty camshaft sensor. It could, however, be many other things, so the cost of repair will be unknown until it is diagnosed.

You will have to take it to a Toyota dealer, who will plug their electronic diagnostic machine in to your car. If it's a sensor, it shouldn't cost much (mine was still under warranty).

Oh, and ignore the nobheads who knock the Yaris; it's a quality product.

its your engine management light, what it is telling you is that one of the engine sensors has gone out of range or failed completely, your main dealer will be able to plug in to your ecu scan the system and tell you which sensor has failed and hopefully repair it. although your engine may be running ok it is because your car is compensating for the dodgy sensor by guessing at the value it should be sending just to keep you mobile (a bit like if you were blind your other senses becoming more acute to make up for it) however your fuel economy will be suffering at the very least as this state is normally known as a type of "limp home mode"

if the engine warning light is on it means theres a fault what fault who knows so repair costs no one can answer but you need to take it to get checked out or you may cause more damage meaning even more cost it may be something really simple ??

Take it to your dealer...I think its something to do with the bulbs...
Is the engine working properly?
But anyway, let them know the problem...
