both if you're doing them correctly - also don't do them too fast - and be sure you don't strain your neck or hurt your back - you should 'feel' the burn.. but only in your middle!

Both. Coming up the muscle contracts to pull you up - as you go down the muscle lengthens slowly in a controlled way. Both actions work the muscle.

You gain muscle when the muscles repair themselves later. You break the muscle down anytime there is resistance.
