I'm a remodeling contractor who is lucky (and good enough) to work with some of the most talented and gifted interior designers in the country, executing and realizing their inspired designs.
For them, it is not only a great career choice, but a very easy one too, since their natural gifts allow them to get extraordinary results with little effort. Their talents just flow as a form of natural expression that they can hardly contain within themselves.
So do a bit of self-analysis and answer to yourself: do enough people (not you or your mother!...) tell you that you have an extraordinary ***eye*** for it? If the answer is YES! - then there you go, congratulations you lucky bastard! You were born for it.
But let's be realistic, most people (like me...) are not. So if your answer is not an emphatic 'yes', then consider other career options, or you'll condemn yourself to work very hard for mediocre results, both aesthetically and financially.
And as a professional in the field I see plenty of that too...

My dream job would be to help people redecorate their homes, and reorganize it to better suit their needs. But what I've found, in my city anyways and from networking with friends, is that everyone seems to want the help, without having to lose the emotionally-attached mementos that clutter their lives, or pay more then a hundred dollars. It makes me quite sad to hear someone reach out for help, only to give them my ideas and vision and have them say "oh but i dont want much change.. or to throw anything out, and I really dont have any money to spend." How can I create a business knowing the people I want to help are so stubborn?
I would say it is great to have as a hobby, but you'd really have to have a lot of credentials under your belt and get some rich clients in order to really get a business off the ground. :(

my mom started her own interior decorating business, just as a hobby. she was naturally good at it so her friends asked her to do some rooms in their houses. their friends saw how amazing her work was and called her to do thier houses. then they told their friends, and so on. it has been four years since my mom started her business and almost every week she has a new client. i know she makes a pretty decent amount of money. so if you want my opinion, if you're good at it then why not? but i think you have to be born with a gift. you cant learn this stuff in a class room. my mom went to college for science. but her natural gift of painting became her job. she also does a lot of faux painting. i hope this helped with your decision.

Yes I agree with Loren, it's a gift that I wish I was better at, my sister got it instead of me. I had a client who's wife took a coarse and she was OK but not as good as my sister who has no class room decorating , she's just got it! And yes they make $$$$$$
