she only does it after she eats. I've tried moistening her food to see if that would help, but it didn't. she acts like she is swallowing it back down, but i was concerned because I heard it could be a sign of feline asthma.

Hi jeremy, please put a dab of vaseline on her paw ( top of it) twice a day, and allow her to lick it off.
Moist food will not help.
She needs lubricant to help her cough it up or pass it thru.
they sell like a liver of fish flavored one at the supermarket, ( which the main ingredient is petroleoum jelly anway) that the kitty will lick off your finger.
If this persists after you try this, for more than a week, or you note kitty is not using the litter box, please rush to the vet, she could have a n intestinal blockage which could be fatal.

But do try the hairball remedy asap.

If you place small amounts of vegetable oil or canola oil (something that is safe for humans to eat) it will help the hairball move through the body safely (1 Tablespoon a day should work). If they cat doesnt seem to be able to cough it up or pass it on through then there may be something more serious wrong with the cat. You can also go and buy a hairball medicine at any store that sells pet supplies but oil works just as well. I hope that this helps, if not I suggest taking the cat to a vet and letting him diagnose the problem.

For one thing your cat needs to be brushed every day. I recently started feeding my cat vanilla greek yogurt with a little ground flax seed mixed in and she has almost completely stopped throwing up and coughing up hairballs. She usually licks it off the spoon, but when she doesn't I open her mouth and stick it in, her coat is much silkier and smoother now too. She is a persian so they have a lot of hair.

It does sound like hairballs. Try a product called Petromalt that helps them pass the hairball through their digestive tract. Brushing the cat will also reduce the amount of hair she ingests.

If this doesn't help and things get worse - time for the vet.

I don't want to cause alarm here, but let me tell you. I have 4 cats......HAD 5, and one of them kept getting really skinny and doing the same thing. I took it to the vet and found out he had FLV......feline Lukemia Virus. ALL my cats are INDOOR cats, NEVER left outside, so I suspect one caught it possibly when I took him to be neutered then passed it onto the other one. I eventually had to put Smokey to sleep, he only weighed 4 1/2 pounds. My other cat Killer, has had FLV for about 4 1/2 or 5 years, and still does it, but he is still with me. I would take him to the vet and have him checked.

Have you tried giving her only wet food, no dry food at all? I'd ask the vet about it next time you go in. Or call on the phone and ask them that question just to be safe.
