When useing fondant to cover the cake do you need to brush on any liquid, some recipes I have seen say yes and others don't specify. If so what could I use other than alcohol?

some people use a thin marmalade brushed on.
I use a thin coat of buttercream icing. (You can just us canned Icing if you want) but you do need something for the fondant to adhere to,, especially on the sides because the fondant will pull too hard on the top edges of the cake and tear.
If this is your first experience with fondant, roll it out thicker than you think or than is reccommended so you can handle it easier and rol it bigger.
a pizza cutter is great to cut the extra off the bottom

Take a manageable size chunk and get some shortening and work it all together. Keep adding shorten until it is soft again...this should help...I'm not a huge fan of the wilton fondant cause it tastes like card board...Try satin ice same time, it has the flavor of a marshmallow or Oreo cookie filling. Fondant is normal pretty stiff at first, but you just need to work with you hands a bit and warm it up!

You could just use water if you needed it to stick in certain places but usually its heavy enough that it stays in place by itself and once its left for awhile it sets itself.

If it doesn't stick you should use water to help it.
