Your VCR can't record the satellite feed directly, so you need to connect video out from the set-top to video in in the VCR.

Some satellite set-top boxes do have an "IR blaster" (Dish for example). In effect, they send an IR command to the VCR to start recording when you set "record" on the set-top box (not the VCR).
So, check your set-top if it has a "record" option and see its manual on how to properly set the IR blaster codes to control your VCR.

First of all. make sure your connections are all correct. to start off there are plugs on the back of the satellite dish receiver there is 3 plugs saying: A/V Out. And plug them in the front or back of the VCR make sure there saying A/V In. change the VCR channel to line 1 or 2. (it depends if you plug it in front or back. These inputs are marked.)

You want your VCR on either Line1 or Line2, depending on how you hooked it up. Your VCR cannot decode the satellite signal, only the decoder can do that. So your VCR does not change the channel.
