I've been here for 2 years. 1 in Fairfax and 1 in Arlington. It seems to just wear you down little by little until there's nothing left. I find that apartments are so expensive that I can barely afford to do anything else. My car insurance went way up when I moved here. Everything is so crammed in together that I feel like a sardine in a can. If you want to move further out and still work in the city, you have to deal with unreasonable commute hours. The traffic sucks and you get stuck when you try to go anywhere. Half the roads here don't even have turn lanes so you end up getting stuck behind someone turning. Not to mention there always seems to be an angry, unfriendly atmosphere in the city. People are so aggressive and generally stuck in the routine of driving 2 hours to get to work. I guess I would be angry too if I had to drive that long every day. It's hard to find any good reasons to stay here. Any suggestions?

I still have yet to hear any good things about it. Everyone I talk to hates it here. Barbados, your rudeness precedes you. Are you from DC?

I totally agree with everything you said!!!!! We lived in Northern Virginia for three years and it was the most miserable three years of my life! Everything was fast paced and people looked down on us because we were not wealthy enough (even though my husband had a respectable, good paying job) to afford an insanely priced house in a planned community. I think the only reason people stay is for work. Its kind of a trap that's hard to get out of. My best advise is to just try to get out. There isn't anything better there. Our rent went up every year along with our annual raise...so we could never get ahead. I know its hard, but I suggest you try to seek work elsewhere. Put those resumes out everyday and follow up....maybe it will work for you. Good luck to you!

I grew up in Alexandria (around Mount Vernon) and Arlington (Ballston) but it has changed so much since I was a kid. Normal people could actually afford to live there. High prices finally drove our family south to the Fred'burg area, which I love.

I can't stand DC or NoVA. The people are so pretentious, the traffic is awful, and the average working stiff will never be able to afford to buy a home, barely rent, even in the outskirts. Parking is an ongoing struggle in most places. You go into bars there, and it's all uptight young professionals. Sooooo boring.

If you're not happy start looking elsewhere. Other places in Va such as Richmond and Charlottesville are 10 times better.

I love to visit DC but would never live there. Move down to the Dallas-Fort Worth area and enjoy life!

We have plenty of good jobs, the weather is mild and sunny, housing is more than reasonable, the people are warm and friendly and the traffic is nothing compared to NY or DC, especially on the Fort Worth side. It's truly God's country!

I agree. I grew up in the DC area and moved to Boston and I find Boston to be great. But DC sucks. Boston is crowded and has bad traffic (not like DC) but the people are great and there's a lot going for Boston. The only reason I miss DC is the Smithsonian. (And my family)

I have a nice home in Herndon, VA in a normal middle class neighborhood. Our town is 15 miles from DC and I love living there. I grew up in PG county in the Maryland suburbs and really think that the College Park/University Park area is a great place to live also. My sister lives in the Woodmoor neighborhood of Silver Spring and really likes it there too. Maybe you'd like it better if you had family in the area.

I agree...Life is no fun in DC area. On top of what you mentioned most people who live in that area are in a transitional mode and I did not find a sense of family life there either. People are in general ruder and always seem to be in a rush. I suggest moving out of there like I did!

Life in big cities is like that...
If you can't adapt in DC you won't do it in any other major city.
If you like space you should go live somewhere where land is a little cheaper and you can have plenty of space.
It's really all about adapting.

I suspect that there are a lot of people who like living there and perhaps are of the thinking that "Home is where you make" and just do.
I doubt very much if there a piano tied to your butt, so why don't you move if you do not like it?
