My golden is 10months old and has been shedding for about a month now, and I was wondering how long this is going to take. I am amazed at the amount of hair that comes off her each day? Does brushing help? With or against the grain of her coat? How long can I expect her to be shedding for?

My goldens really didn't get their full adult coats until about 18 months to 2 years. The shedding however is part of the lifetime package. Brushing helps tremendously - with the grain of the coat.

I found a grooming tool called a Mars Coat King that is an excellent tool for reducing the amount of undercoat, which is the cause of a lot of the shedding. You need a 12 blade for a golden. They can be purchased online from many sources and are worth the money.

There is also a tool called a rake that is also helpful.

I use these two tools and a regular wire bristle dog brush (with the soft protected tips) about once every week and the shedding problem is greatly reduced.

I also have a good vacuum that I use once a week and a Roomba that I use when I don't feel like vacuuming which helps keep the dog hair under control.

Your right she is shedding her puppy fur. She is now getting her adolescent fur. Shedding will continue for a few months. Get a good slicker brush and a rake designed for double coats. Brush her every other day. If you use a slicker brush brush with the grain of the fur, with the rake it doesn't matter. Just don't brush to hard or you may scratch the skin. You will see when her new coat is completely in. She will blow this coat in the fall then her adult coat will come in. Just keep on top of the brushing and things should work out OK

The shedding will go on for her entire life... welcome to the world of Golden Retrievers. She will shed more during the spring than other times of the year as her winter coat falls out (the thickness of that will vary depending on where you live).
Brushing will help (always brush with the grain of the coat) and there are dietary supplements and anti-shedding shampoos that can help some as well.

This time of year he's going to shed a lot, then he'll shed a lot the rest of the year- just not quite as much as now. Sorry, but that's life with most kinds of dogs! I have two very short haired breeds and even they shed. (A greyhound and a chinese crested).
