I just got back from vacation and I'm pretty sure my little one has kennel cough or some sort of cold?! He's been more lethargic than usual (he's 4 1/2 mos and not running around like usual)...we picked him up at the kennel (a very very good one) on Sat. and since then he's been sneezing a ton, and dry hacking...seems to be the correct symptoms?! He's had all his vaccinations, including bordetella (but I know this is somewhat like the flu shot...not always preventative). I'm going to call the vet and take him in, but wondering if anyone has come in contact with this?? Anything I can do to help my pup to ease him till the vet?

Probably the best thing you can do is just supportive care. Make sure he's got plenty of clean water, maybe warm his food a bit, make sure he's got a warm, comfy place to sleep and keep him away from drafts and dusty places. Kennel cough is a bit like a cold for humans so treat him to the same things you like when you're feeling crappy. Minus the ice cream and junk food! (that's my thing!) Your vet may prescribe anitibiotics, as it is a bacterial infection; if so, giving your dog some yogourt daily, while taking the antibiotic will help his intestinal health. If your vet confirms that your dog has kennel cough, you might want to let the kennel know, so that they can take precautions with future boarders. Good luck, and hope this helps!

This is most likely kennel cough. I work in a shelter where all the dogs get vaccinated immediately for kennel cough but we just had a huge outbreak anyway. It might just be this time of year. We're very clean as well, the runs get cleaned 3x a day but KC still came in. Good luck and I'm glad you're taking him to the vet.

Get him to the vet as soon as you can. Could be kennel cough, could be upper resp infection. If the dog had the vaccine only a couple days before the kenneling, it is very possible that he has kennel cough. It can take days to kick in. The vet will give him antibiotics. As a vet tech (in school), I can't tell you to give any OTC stuff, but if you do, PLEASE tell the vet when you see them. Things like meds given before they see them can be important in case something else comes up. Kennel cough is kind of like a cold, it may go away but is better if treated.

If he truly has kennel cough, like a common cold in humans, it will eventually pass without any adverse reactions. Do what you would do to a loved member of your family in caring for your dog.

He could be allergic to something in your home. Many of my dogs exhibit those symptoms when experiencing allergic reactions.

If he's been innoculated for Bordatella, I'd let the "cold" run its course and only take him to the vet if symptoms worsen or change.

kennel cough can be frustrating to deal with. The KC vacs only cover very few strains so its not unusual for a dog to pick it up even after being vaccinated. There isn't a lot you can do without meds. Good luck

I had a pup who had it when we adopted her from the shelter. It is highly contagious, so if you have other dogs, be ready for them to get it as well. You will need to take your pup to the vet and they will give him an antibiotic and some cough medicine. It is a frustrating thing to deal with and just like any good pet parent, you'll wish it was over sooner than it actually will be. Good luck!!!

Kennel cough is very common and should be treated.
There are other things that can _sound_ like kennel cough and be more dangerous. You should get him to the vet asap.

My vet recommends Vick's Formula 44. I have used it on my dogs, they don't like it, so use a syringe without the needle and place it in the corner of his mouth and hold his mouth shut until it is down. They try to spit it out if it is too close to the front of the mouth.

you can give your puppy a couple teaspoons a day of Robitussin DM. I have put my dog in the bathroom with the shower on so he can breath the steam in, both options seem to work fine til the vet can give antibotics
