i recenty received a pug from a local breeder in my area as a present from my wife, and he pug is registered with the ACA. i have never heard of this before and i am a skeptic of its legitimacy. i went to the website and its poorly put together. i cant get to any links except the ones that are forms to give them money. my wife spent quite a bit of money on our dog, and as a previous pug owner i feel as if the dog is inadequate to a pugs features. my question here is, what is the ACA all about and can i get my dog registered in the AKC?

I am sorry, but you won't be able to register with AKC. ACA is a puppy mill's registration, and for breeders who can't get AKC registration.
There are a few reasons for a dog being denied AKC registration, even if they are, or appear to be purebred.
The most common these days, is that the breeder bought the breeding stock with 'limited' registration, meaning that the AKC breeder sold them with papers that stipulated that they were not of breeding quality, and their pups can't be registered.
Another, is that the breeding dog's parentage is unknown..such as unregistered pups bought from a newspaper ad.
Another reason, is a breeder that uses dogs that are not truly purebred. I had a relative that did that. she would have a Pom that may have been part Chihuahua, and would sell the offspring as pure Pomeranian...touting the puppies as extra tiny..and registered with the ConKC (another puppy mill registry)
The last common reason, being that the kennel produces more than 3 litters per year, and would not pass an AKC inspection. (that happened to that same relative )

You cannot get AKC papers on your puppy. However, there are AKC puppies that are not great quality just as there are in any of the other registries such as ACA, APRI, CKC etc.
The comment about AKC inspections should have read 7 litters a year causes HVB inspections with AKC. AKC is a club whose members are smaller clubs and a registry service. Having an AKC registration does NOT insure that a dog will be bred to its breed standard. Better show breeders do register with the AKC however not all breeders who register with the AKC worry about type as much as others do. Now here is a little truth, many breeders limit the registrations of dogs that are worthy of breeding for many reasons other than the puppy's worthiness. Consequently it is possible to actually find excellent quality in some litters which carry other than AKC registrations.

You have good reason to be skeptical. I have never heard of ACA but AKC is a registry that is not that reliable either. I have seen some AKC papered dogs that have all kinds of negative traits, over bite, under bit, ears don't stand, hang or set on the head right, deformaties, bad temperament, bad conformation, and more.

What you really need is the Pedigree Papers. With out pedigree papers dogs are just mongrels tha BYDers have produced or perhaps a puppy mill.

Competent breeders produce pups to be the best they can be. They breed out faults and negative predisposistions by using the genetic's of the dogs they breed.

That is why so many of us on this site urge others to spay or nerter a pet.

ACA does not have the same criteria as the AKC. Their only criteria is you pay them money, send a pic or something and they send you papers. That is why they are not considered a reputable registry. Those use this registry use it for a reason, they can't get an AKC registration. There is absolutely no guarantee any dog registered with the ACA is purebred. If a breeder is cutting corners on something as simple as registration, I wonder what else? As someone else mentioned there are far too many bad examples of GSDs. Going to a good breeder who does proper health clearances is extremely important

No, the AKC will not accept dogs that are ACA registered. ACA is a bogus registry. Puppymills use them to register the mongrels they breed, and don't be fooled, if it look like a pug, doesn't necessarly mean it's a full blooded pug especially with those papers.

I've never heard of the ACA before, so do not know how legitimate it is, but if the puppy's parents are not AKC registered, the puppy cannot be. Any registration papers would have to come from the breeder.

Contact the national breeders association for your breed and ask them about both your breeder's credentials and the ACA. I believe the ACA is a hobby club. Hobby clubs admit mixed breeds that the AKC or European clubs will not.

Your wife should have a contract from the breeder and there should be a return clause in it. But, if you like your new puppy and (a contract will demand that you spay or neuter your dog) you aren't planning on showing the dog then the lineage doesn't really matter. I would not return him to that breeder either, if you do prefer a purebred with legitmate papers, I would take the financial loss and turn your dog over to a rescue for his breed.

Good luck.

ACA is not a legit registry..it is one of the scam registries that were set up and used by BYB/mills in otherwords irresponsible breeders.
No you can't get your dog AKC registered if it doesn't have AKC parents and come from an AKC registered litter.

ACA is not a legitimate registry. You can't get your dog AKC registered unless both parents are AKC registered and the breeder has registered the litter.

ACA is useless. The only way you can get your pup registered with the AKC is if the parents were registered and the breeder registered the litter.
