The thing is that some DVD Player's don't allow you to play VCD's. So, I'm guessing that your Sony DVD Player might not allow you to play VCD's. So you might able to play only DVD's. However, some DVD players allow you to play VCD's, so there might be something wrong with your VCD or your DVD Player.

Will there be a loss in quality by using a dvd player to play my cds? No not at all. and also does it make a difference in quality if you buy a fine cd player or a great cd player? Yes it does. would a hdmi cable give me better sound quality? Yes it will. HDMI is digital rather than analog and is the superior method for transmitting picture and sound.

Just put it in the player and hit the start button. Make sure you plug in the electric cord for power supply and you should have some songs on the CD.
