Ugh. Please do not serve two buck chuck or white zin. Ugh.
Here are the ones I recommend for the general public. All are under $20:
Six Prong Red
Pepe Sangiovese
Cycles Gladiator Syrah
House Red
Maryhill Reserve Sangiovese (this may be a little more than $20)
Amberhill Cabernet
Il Bastardo
Chiaramonte
Concha Y Toro Castillero Diablo Cab
Montes Alpha Syrah
Nice inexpensive whites are:
Maryhill Viognier (a little sweet)
Fetzer Gerwurtztraminer (a lot sweet)
Maryhill Gerwurtz (also quite sweet)
Reuscher-Haart Reisling (Sweet but with a citrus finish)
Duck Pond Pinot Gris
Maryhill Reserve Chardonnay
Moscato Allegro (very sweet)
KJ Reserve Chardonnay
Kim Crawford Marlborough Sauv Blanc
If you do one of the sweet whites, make sure that you have a non-sweet one available for those who dno't like sweet wines.
Have fun!

I'll also buy TJ's Two Buck Chuck for the white but not the red - I buy TJ's Three Buck Moe (J. W. Morris brand). It comes in Cab, Merlot and Zinfandel. Also, TJ's has just come out - at least at its MA stores - with 3 Buck Moe white reisling and gewurztraminer which are quite good (I just tried them).
Also, consider also a dry rose - they have become quite popular
over the past couple of years. The New York Time's critic selected the mirthfully named South African Goats Do Roam as the best for the money, although it's now with screw cap. About $ 6 - $ 7 in the States.
Also, for what it is worth Decanter magazine and many wine critics consider the best commonly available red wine for the money to be the Casilleiro del Diablo Cabernet Sauvignon. $ 8 at my local TJs but only $ 7 at a neaby competitor ($ 6.30 if bought as part of a case).

For reds I have always enjoyed the Italian wines of Tuscany. I'm partial to any wines from Antinori, Banfi, Carpineto and DaVinci. I only drank reds until recently (last 3 yrs). Again my favorites come from Italy. Just about any Pinot Grigio. I also am beginning to really enjoy New York State dry Rieslings. Particularly Hosmer and Buttonwood Grove. All of the above are usually under $40.

I usually buy wine at Kroger or Meijer, since they're reasonably priced with a decent selection.
Two favorites...
Black Opal Cabernet-Merlot, about $10 a bottle (in Ohio)
Rosemount Estates Pinot Noir, also about $10 a bottle
If you want a white wine, I would suggest an inexpensive bottle of White Merlot. It's a great wine, even for those who don't usually like wine. I can't remember what the name of the one I really like is, but it has a bundle of grapes shown on the label, and it's about $4 a bottle, but it's great!

Liebfraumilch is a white wine that is generally low cost. I generally buy Blue Nun. Tart and dry
Rhine wines are also white and can be found even cheaper than Liebfraumilch. Rhine wines are sweeter.
The best thing to do is buy something you like. I used to buy this wine called "Eye of the Storm". It was a "blush" wine made from grapes that had to be picked early because of Hurricane Gloria in the Nineties. Later they made it from a mix of wines. It was not as good but I continued to by it because it I loved telling the story of living through the hurricane.

Depends what you consider inexpensive.
A good Aussie wine is Penfolds, their cheapest is 'Rawsons Retreat'. The cab sav is a good choice for around $12 AUD
The next range up from Penfolds is 'Koonunga Hill'. For around $15, their shiraz is really nice.
Also Aussie 'Wolf Blass' have a good cab sav for around $12, and a good chardonay for around the same.
Spanish 'Ash Tree Estate' have a good shiraz for around $10 and also a nice chardonay for about the same.
If you need something American, I've heard that most wines from the Napper Valley are of good quality, not sure on the prices, sorry.

Rex Goliath Chardonnay (has a big rooster on label) is a wonderful low priced white. @ $7 bottle. Estancia Merlot or Cabernet are both great reds, dry and inexpensive. @ $8-$9 bottle.

Trader Joe's has Charles Shaw for $3, $2 in CA. (Otherwise known as Two Buck Chuck.) It's won awards and is so cheap that my friends and I buy it by the case. I drink the Chardonnay. It's really good. Also, if you have a Trader Joe's near you, there is a large selection of inexpensive wines and the people that work there are helpful and friendly. (I go there a lot.) Good luck.

I really like Californians like Gallo Wines, they are around $5 and the Zinfandel is a rose wine, light, fruity, kightly sweet wine. Especially for BBq's or just for sipping
