my orthodontist never explained what to do with the wax

You make a smooth gob and stick it on the part of the brace that is cutting (making your lip, cheek sore and red) . Then you form it smooth so the soreness can heal. He just assumed you would know. Ask someone who has braces to help you or go back and talk to the assistant. They shouldn't charge, it is part of the treatment.

Wax is usually to cover up any part of the metal that may be sticking out and hurting the rest of your mouth.

I always pulled off a piece that looked about the size a I needed to cover the wire or whatever, rolled ti between my fingers to create a ball and then stuck it on whatever I needed to. It kind of smooths over whatever may be sticking out, but if it continues to bother you, see if your orthodontist can fix it permanently.

You cover the braces with it, supposed to protect your mouth....good luck
