This depends on if you want to get fancy or not. Here is what I keep on hand at my house:
1. Sweet and Sour Mix (whisky sours, margaritas, cosmos)
2. Collins Mix (vodka collins)
3. Diet and regular coke (rum and coke and long island iced tea)
4. 7-UP (whisky and 7)
5. Frozen margarita mix in regular and strawberry
6. Frozen daquiri mix
7. Cream (to blend with Kahlua, Chambord, other liquors)
8. Jagermeister I drink straight up!
You might invest in a bartenders guide, which can be purchased thru Amazon.com or Barnes and Nobel!

both vodka & rum mix well with most fruit juices, especially grapefruit or orange juice. always a good idea to have tonic or club soda on hand as well, for those who are watching their figures. rum & whiskey (bourbon, not malt) will mix well with cola (again, some regular & some diet). don't mix jagermeister, as it is to be served very very chilled on its own. don't mix scotch (malt) whiskey, serve with or without ice, offer bottled water for those who want a lighter drink.

Any sort of fruit juice can be mixed with vodka and rum, including orange, cranberry, peach, pear, mango, pina colada mix, etc.

O.J. & Cranberry Juice for the Vodka.
Coke will work for both the Whisky & Rum.
