I would definately 1000% pick a male! The females pick their favorite "Person" and don't pay attention to the other people in the house. Males know who their owner is and pays the most attention to them but give equal attention to the other people around him. Just make sure you get him fixed. (I have a Labrador. We have another stray girl dog.)

I personally would choose a female. But there are alot of factors in chosing a dog besides the sex. You need to consider the breed, who will be training the dog(who will it be around more), what do you want it for(guard dog, companionship, etc). We have a 4 year old female lab, and a 4month old basset hound female. Before we got the basset hound, my husband and daughter wanted a big blocky black male lab puppy, so that's what they got. I was the one taking care of it and he was stubborn, would not listen, always peed in his kennel, chewed on everything, it was awful and no one was ever around to help with him,I dealt with this for 6months and couldn't do it anymore, I had a 1year old little boy and between that dog and my son I was going crazy! Just so happened we had a friend that was looking for a lab, so he has him now and you wouldn't believe the difference in that dog. But, now I got my basset hound and she's perfect. For a puppy she is very well behaved and great with my kids, she gets along great with our other female. Picking a dog is not easy, you do have to consider the breed, I do believe that males are harder, they are more stubborn and will try to get the upper hand, females are more submissive and willing to please(ask any male). If I were to get another dog, I'de get another female in a heartbeat, never had problems with a female. Good luck-do research on the breed you decide to get, it helps!

I wouldn't choose a dog based on sex but rather the temperament.
There are several things that you want to look for when evaluating a puppy. The most important thing that I look for is a dog that is in a neutral position with the pack, ie; He/she is not the puppy that comes bursting at you looking for every single moment of attention or the shy leary dog in the back.
I pick up all the puppies and spend time playing with each one to see how they respond to me. Does he/she follow me when I turn around and walk away? Does he/she allow me to freely pet him/her and roll him/her over on their belly? Does the puppy react fearful to loud noises or sudden movement?
Of course once I have narrowed it down I look for a puppy that appears healthy. He/she should not have a snotty nose, cough, or running eyes. He/she should be of a good weight not skinny or have a pot belly (this can be a sign of parasites). The puppy's fur should look healthy without bald spots or sores.
I think ultimately you will find that special puppy after playing with each and everyone of them. If you spay or neuter your pet it really doesn't make a difference which sex you choose.

it actually DOES depend on breed, and what you want it for.

My pup is an Akita, and since I had second pick, I got a male. First pick woulda been a female for temperment.

If I was picking, oh, a chi, I woulda wanted a male. Pit bull types, female...

now, for temperment, and to get more laid back, females are usually the way to go. If you want something to protect you, males. If you have a dog already, its up to him!

Male, I have two males now and would choose another male in a heart beat. I like male dogs and would not hesitate to add another to my pack. I am confident w/ my training ability. Now some people shouldn't even have one male let alone two-3-4. I plan on buying 10 acres of land soon, that's when my pack will compete w/ Cesar Milan's pack.

I have one of each. The female is much calmer dog, the male is rather hyper. The female is 11 years old, may have something to do with it, but she has always been a sweetie and the plus with a female is they don't mark their territory. The male is 3 years old. Both have been fixed and both are mixed breeds which I adopted. I think a lot depends on the breed.

male- they act like puppies for longer, you don't have to worry about them going into heat, i'm a female and male dogs attach themselves to females, depending on the breed of the dog you can get huge stud fees without having to worry about visiting the vet every couple of weeks or puppy proofing your house, it costs less to nueter a dog than it does to spay one. but i'm not saying that if i fell in love with a puppy that i wouldn't take it if it was a female, because there are so many stupid people out there that think theirs a huge emotional difference between a male and a female, but really it does depend on the breed, in some cases.

Are you asking about pick of the litter?

I wouldn't gender pair, even from the same litter. I would pick a male, if this were my only dog. They are just easier than females.

I would say a female. There are disadvantages to both though. Male dogs tend to mark their territory everywhere everytime you walk them, but females go into heat unless you have them fixed. Females though you can solve the problem, males you can't. Also males tend to be a little more agressive and posessive.

I would never make my choice simply on sex. I have too many other requirements to look at rather than which sex they are.
I would want all the puppies tested with the Volhard aptitude test
http://www.volhard.com/puppy/pat.htm
the bottom of this page tells you how to interpret the scores http://www.shilohs.issdc.com/ISSDC/ISSDCPageTemperament.htm

The puppy temperment along with making a criticle evaluation of the breed and whether it fits my lifestyle would be the foremost items on my list. If i had both a male and female that fit this criteria, I would then look at which pup indicated it wanted to be with me more. I want a dog that is highly driven to be with people and work for them. Given these requirements i think the selection of the correct puppy would then be evident to me.
