I never filed to recieve what my employer had taken out (1040EZ) to get money back. I think I may make enough this year to have to file in 08, but I wonder if I can get money back for the last 6 years.

If you were not required to file then it is a personal decision. I would recommend it so that you can get back all of the withholdings that your employer withheld from your paycheck.

If your earnings was less than the standard deduction plus personal exemption, then your tax liability is zero and any withholding taken out by your employer would be refunded to you. However, you only have 3 years to claim a refund. Therefore, you have until April 17, 2007 to file a refund for the 2003 tax year. Tax refunds that were due to you for years earlier than 2003 are permanently gone and you cannot get it back.

You are allowed to filed income tax returns no later than 3 years after the returns were due. That means that you will not be able to file for all years that you missed.

However, you should file for the last 3 years' if you had withholdings so that you can get the refunds.

If you had a refund coming, you can only get it back if you file within three years of the original due date of the return. If you file by April 15 this year you can still get your 2003 refund. Anything older than that is already too late.

If you have a refund coming there won't be any late-filing penalties.
