The reason for that is simple, yet most people really misunderstand it and think it's about the pharmaceutical companies making money and it's really about them trying to save your life or prevent an ER visit and the like.
After a certain amount of time, which has been tested and retested for years, a medicine begins to break down chemically and is no longer what it was when it started. The Tylenol is no longer Tylenol because an actual chemical breakdown is taking place in the bottle and once you pass the exp. date, you begin to tread into dangerous water if you take the medicine. The make-up of the medicine has truly changed. Think about food, for instance. You leave a loaf of bread out too long past the exp. date and it's no longer a loaf of bread. It just doesn't take quite as long for that to happen as it does a bottle of Tylenol to change it's chemical make-up! But it does happen, and that's why the date's on there. It really IS for your good, and not their pocketbook!

One reason is, that the ingredients will no longer have the potency, as when they were fresh. Another reason is, that some ingredients can become dangerous, past the expiration date. However, there is one more reason, The PHARMACEUTICAL companies loose money if new prescriptions are not written. I know this for a fact, but unless you are a pharmacist, or have extensive knowledge of drugs, you should take the safest precaution and toss the expired medications out!

Some medications are ok to use passed there experation date like asprin, I belive is one. It is not good to use them though because depending on what type of medication it is, it good mix together and become a heavier dose or it may not work at all, the medication has worn off. Everything now days has to have an experation date on it regardless if it is possible to expire or not, for instance water has an expiration date on it.
