We are currently crate training our puppy and every now and then he has an accident. Because the space is confined, he gets in his droppings and smells horrible. How often can he be bathed during the week without drying out his skin?

You need to keep your dog free of feces and urine, so however often that take is how often you bathe that area of your dog.

Your puppy has a bladder about the size of your little finger so it fills up quickly. Try to let him out of the crate at least once every two hours.

Good luck with the crate training. I don't use that method myself, it takes so long and then you have to train the dog all over again once he lives outside of the crate. Best to stay home for a few days, keep an eagle eye on the dog and then take him outside at the first sign. My boy puppy was housebroken at ten weeks using this method. I adopted my girl at one year (she was a rescue and not housebroken) and it took a couple of weeks, using wee wee pads. I placed them all over the house and she took to them like a fish to water. I removed all but one over the course of the two weeks and then moved that pad closer to the back door and then finall put it oustide. Once she started using it oustide I took it away. She was a tough one to train but I don't believe in scolding an animal at all, not for anything they do. So, positive reinforcement takes longer but there is no fear factor in that method.

I'm sure that once a month bath is normal for a dog after the house training is finished. Unless an older dog is in a dirty envirnoment then even that is more that needed.
How long are you keeping the dog in the crate at one time? Dogs do not like to be in there own droppings so I would suggest that you get him/her out more often.
The typical training method is as soon as the dog drinks water or has a meal then outside. If nothing happens back into the crate and watch for any action you consider a move to evacuate the system. If you can catch the dog a few times you will have a house trained dog.

You can bathe him every day if he is covered with feces or urine. Use a gentle shampoo for puppies. This won't go on forever. It's worse to let him remain covered in feces and urine than to wash him daily.

My concern is that your pup is relieving himself inside the crate. Ordinarily they won't do this. Puppy mill puppies often do because they've never had an option. This can be a hard thing to undo.

How long is he required to spend inside his crate every day? If you must leave him confined while going to work, consider getting an x-pen to put the crate inside or putting the crate in a utility room with a tile floor, so that he can sleep in the crate with the door open and come outside the crate to relive himselve on paper. Puppies can't last all day without relieving themselves, and many can't last all night without relieving themselves. You do not want him to learn that it's okay to relieve himself in the crate. But you DEFINITELY don't want to punish him for it.

If you use an oatmeal-based shampoo, you can bathe your dog every 2-3 days. If you still find that his skin is drying out, you can also use a spray-on coat conditioner, or supplement him by putting a bit of olive oil on his food every 4-5 days. With the olive oil, you need to watch his bowel movements to ensure they are not getting too loose. Sometimes, dogs can get diarrhea from too much oil in their diets. Also, check that the humidity in your house is not too low. If it is, you can get a warm mist humidifyer to help out. All dogs are different, so you can experiment with frequency of bathing, use of oil supplements, and coat conditioners. Whatever you do, DO NOT USE HUMAN PRODUCTS!! They are too harsh for animals. There are many economical pet products out there, and your vet will know the best ones to use. Good luck!

I would try spot cleaning him if it has to be done frequently rather than giving him a full bath each time. Weekly baths will definately dry out his skin. Also, try using a good dog shampoo with oatmeal in it to replenish moisture lost while bathing. Good luck! I'm also in the crate training process with my puppy :)

No more than once every two weeks because it can really dry out their skin. Try using the bath wipes for dogs and cologne spray. I wash my puppies belly and feet whenever she steps in one of her "accidents" but use very little shampoo and just clean the dirty parts.

Instead of bathing with a shampoo, you can wash the pup with warm water or use unscented baby wipes. This will prevent overbathing and the chance of drying the pups skin out. Good luck

Once a month is sufficient unless you or your family members have pet allergies, then you can do it weekly, I use shampoo and a conditioner that keeps the skin from drying out.
