It seems to me that most fear comes of not having enough. Not enough time to live, enough food, enough love, enough attraction, enough power, enough people agreeing with you, enough truth, ehough oil, enough energy, enough of ANYTHING!!

i love how you put that! i've heard the same idea refered to by saying that we live in a "consumer culture"(adbusters magazine) and instead of selling with sex, the new corporate powers sell with fear.

my biggest fear is that i am sending my kids mixed messages about the problems of buying into that kind of thinking. for example, when i buy a rage against the machine cd, what message am i really sending? "corporations are bad, they don't care about us, (except record companies and best buy, it's the only place you can get the bonus tracks on the new cd)."

People are mostly afraid of the fantasies they tell themselves. They have an emotional investment in many of the false premises they live by, and it scares the heck out of them- or at least makes them uncomfortable or even angry- to have them challenged!

It's part of the human condition- we ALL have these fears. Those who don't may seem "cool" but are probably either sociopaths or saints. (And you won't hear much about it from the saints.)

Remember Bruce Lee and his family demon! Here was a strong, skillful, spiritual giant who had quite a few problems anyway! The bravest thing to do (Not the easiest, by a long shot!) is to admit you have fears and begin to deal with them.

I'm afraid of Capitalism as it is currently practiced, the maximum extraction of time, effort and money from the most people for the least cost for the most profit for the fewest individuals. Marketeers have learned that cultivation of desire is not enough. Now they sell fear to keep people wanting, "needing", hoarding crap that will not save them from the fact that nothing lasts forever.

The Buddhists have it right. Desire is the source of suffering. But they are sooo outnumbered.

Claudia...most fear comes from fear reactions triggered by things which are not fearful. But, also some of what you have said as well. I am a person who has panic disorder and generalized anxiety disorder and sometime very bad depression.

By fear, my panic, my depression, stems from people hatintg other people. To me, this is the worst thing possible in this world.

That is for those who can't control their emotions. Fear is simply meant to make you aware of yourself and your surroundings. When you place fear in other things (the Lack of Having), tangible or intangible, you are submitting yourself to that thing. Soon your life revolves around that thing. those who are afraid of not having money focus on money... same as sex, friendships, titles, and material things.
I am not afraid of anything on earth.

I'm afraid of those green jello dessert molds that have different varieties of fruits, nuts, and veggies buried beneath the surface. I think THAT fear is a fear of "too much"...too much of the unknown.

Nothing anymore. All my fears have already happened to me and I am still alive. So, I'm in a fearless state now.

Except for cockroaches...I don't like them, they creep me out.

I am afraid of the blood that is on my hands for every person I have failed to share the Gospel with, or have turned away because of any hypocrisy they have seen in my life.

I am afraid of being shamed in the Presence of my Lord when He comes because of those things.

Fear... I'm afraid of running out of cigarettes at the wrong moment.

Religious fanatics. Seriously, they always say that you are going to burn forever unless you convert, and so forth. And sometimes they commit suicide. Did you hear about these people who all killed themselves at the same time, sometime around 200, I think, because they thought that the world was going to end?
