I taught my 4year old almost 5 how to call 911 the other day, I know it might be a little too young but I live 2 hours away from any family or friends and I am a stay at home mom with my husband working out of town often. So if an emergency did happen he and my 6 month old would be left alone for hours or even days. So I thought it would be a good idea.
Anyways, this morning while I was feeding my 6 month old he called 911 and told them he had an owie ( he rolled his finger up in the car window yesterday) What can I say to make him understand what an emergency is? Thankyou in advance!

She is not too young to learn this! Good for you. I teach preschool and we have lots of conversations about when to call 911. I throw out some examples of times to call and times not to call and ask them, for each example, if they should call or not. For example:

“What if I broke my fingernail? Should you call 911?”

“What if we couldn’t find the dog? Should you call 911?”

“What if I fell down and couldn’t get up? Should you call 911?”

“What if we smell smoke? Should you call 911?”

“What if we found some matches? Should you call 911?”

Just throw out many examples of when it is and is not appropriate to call and she will get a better idea of what an emergency is and what is not an emergency.

I agree with the other answers. Make sure your child now understand what a real emergency is. If mommy doesn't move or wake up. You are cut with lots of blood. If mommy or daddy tell to call 911. If you smell smoke. All are some of the points you can give your child to help understand when to call.

First off I have to say thats to cute most 911 operators understand that this happens so they normaly do not get upset. As for how to teach him it takes time but what I did with my younger brother was do not call unless 1 you can not find mom or dad, 2 if mom or dad do not wake up/ move. 3 if you cut your self very badly ( lots of blood) 4 most of all Only if mommy or daddy say to call 911.
