I think that it is funny that we put all of this mystery in Martial-Arts. How can kicking and blocking help you? C'mon you are better than that.
If you practiced Football (American) how does going over plays with nobody in front of you help? In Basketball how does a lay-up drill help? In Martial Arts, just like anything else, you must first just do it, in order to be able do it at all.

Martial arts is wierd for me. When I go there, I relax. its a place that I can totally unwind at. All the stress from the day and all the problems still waiting outside can be blocked out by how much you have to focus while you are in there. I don't know if people really get improved concentration in school, or a better ability to study and what not... but for me. Its an out from life. I go in, train hard, and love it.
The fighting part of training is something I like the best. I am competitive by nature so its fun for me. It also gives you a sense of security and a confidence you can carry with you outside the school.

the benefits of training are:
1. to train your body so that the kicks, blocks, and strikes become a repeditive motion.
when you do a kick, your muscle puts that kick into its memory banks, so to speak, and the more you do that the more your muscles memorize the movement, that way it becomes reactive, and it's always there..
take a guy who used to train like an animal and he stops for a year or two.. his kicks and punches will still be strong and powerful because the muscle still remembers how to execute the kick or punch..
2. training helps you execute the kicks, blocks and punches correctly. have you ever struck the pad wrong, hurts don't it...
well, when you learn how to execute the movements correctly, they become more powerful and exacting. skill comes from practice..
3. for those who spar or do contact martial arts, it benefits you, by giving you that bit of preperation of knowing what it's like to get hit. what it's like to stand there and feel that adrenaline dump that you get when you are confronted in any way, whether if it's by an opponent, or some guy that's pushing you around on the streets.
you learn how to control that part of you that wants to freeze, and when it comes to a reality situation, you're better adapt to deal with it...
there are many other benefits to training, including cardio, conditioning, and strengthening your body, learning balance and dicipline.. and please don't hesitate to ask your sensei or sifu, that's what they're there for, that's what you're paying them for, to teach..
no question is stupid and there are so many things people don't question and just do on faith, because their instructor tells them to, it's good to know what and why you are doing something..
this helps you better to understand and learn, and makes it easier for your instructor to teach you because you know the reason and purpose for what you are jointly trying to accomplish..

Training will build muscles, muscle memory and up your reflexes. It also helps you remember your Katas and keeps you from looking stupid when you actually do the move in the Dojo. And, if you also play the game of make-believe LOL while you work with your bag it will help you work out a set of moves you can use if attacked.

Well training can put you into excellent physical shape. The more you practice kicks the faster your kicks will become. Power comes with speed, not the other way around. Blocking will become more accurate. As you continue training if anyone were to attack you it would almost be an automatic reaction to defend yourself. As you continue training you'll learn more options, example more kicking combinations and blocking and grapling moves. The more options, the more adaptable you will be to your surroundings, attacker, and even weapons (such as knives)

depends on how you train, your goals and what you use it for.
Even the old folks in the park do get excercise and a health benefit from doing fake tai chi.
Even the hottie at the gym who you wish was doing naked bjj with you but is instead doing "executive boxing" is getting a benefit out of her "tai bo-like" workout.
fitness, learning to fight, and health and hobby enjoyment are all things you can gain from your training. If you are competing and make it on a pro level add "income" to that list too.
different people focus on different reasons. However people should remember that if you are doing "martial arts you must be fighting".

Effective training means you have a goal in mind, and doing things to reach that goal. If you are just talking about practicing without goal or reason, then you are probably just going through the motions and not getting much out of it at all.

it will give you possible tools for action if you need to fight, but the structure and sameness of training means it wont fully prepare you for a real fight outside the dojo. only through real chaos can you define your abilities.
as for the guy who believes that it is a waste because you can get shot. what a defeatist attitude. anyone can get shot, fat couch potatoes get shot too. Cars are worse for killing and I beat you still drive one (or backseat drive). we all die, so why dont we all just sit on front of the TV some more, and avoid the real world because it is too dangerous. lame . "oh no, guns kill, lets stay inside"

You mean benefits right?You can grow in many aspects in your life...it will help you gain mental, spiritual, physical centeredness, it will improve your balance, your judgement, the way you handle things, keep you self-secured, can save yourself or loved-ones, once you practiced long enough it radiates in the totality of you, teh way you speak, walk, eat, sleep, s^*t, f%$7, if you know what i mean...carry on...
