Speed humps are such a low-brow attempt at traffic calming. They distract ones attention away from the wider field of view, where pedestrians could be lurking, by forcing one to focas on the physical road condition. They cause medical issues, especially for people with a predisposition for back and neck ailments. Also they increase the response times of the emergency services, and are the main reason why I don't use the buses. We have the technology to electronically limit the speed of vehicles in residential areas with a radio device. This device could be fitted to existing lamposts and work with a simple device connected to the vehicles engine management system.

For the simple reason that it is easier to dump a lump of badly layed tarmac in the middle of the road than it is to do the job properly, using a chicane style of road-restriction.

Of course, they're much cleverer in Holland, where they simply make straight streets a little narrower and make the road CURVY.

It's so simple when you know how, but have you ever tried talking to councils or dim-witted traffic officers in the UK.

You may as well talk to the lumps of tarmac!

traffic calming usually gets as many people complaining about it after its been put in as people who campain for it before it goes in. speed humps have been miss used in some places in the early days of traffic calming as such measures and there effect were still experimental. speed humps should only be used in residential streets or if they have to be used on through routes they should be designed so that emergency vehicles which generally have a wider wheel track than most cars can span the hump and not have to slow down, i personally feel that chicanes and or give take narrowed sections of road work better. As to medical problems may i suggest that the driver is going too fast if such problems are caused, the 20mph is the max limit not the must do speed. nice idea about radio control but the costs would be prohibitive but just think the police could stop any car they wanted with such a gismo no more yobs racing through towns etc great all for it

Say what you like about them, speed bumps do slow down traffic,I have driven for the past 32 years and am in favour of anything that reduces accidents.Although I must say that in the street where I live some of the nutcases ignore them, this wopuldn't happen if they were made more severe
