It might help a little bit, but it's more likely to just make you sleepy. Another user suggested Klonopin, which will help too, but it's not a cure-all. Honestly though, Ativan would probably be the best option if you're considering benzodiazepines, which you shouldn't be. If it's really bad, you're going to have to go and see a psychiatrist and see if you have Social Anxiety disorder or a related condition. If you do, the treatment plan for Social Anxiety disorder is usually some type of SSRI and therapy (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy). Relying on benzodiazepines (Xanax, Klonopin, etc.), alcohol, or some other drug is not going to help you in the long run.

Anna, It sounds to me like you have social anxiety disorder. You might want to discuss this with your doctor. there are medications that can help alleviate your stress and the feeling of freaking out. I know this because I too have social anxiety disorder and am on medication for it. Believe me it makes a huge difference. I now look forward to being with people and meeting new folks. Take some good deep breaths just before you enter the place the dinner is being held at. Deep breathing will help you to relax or If you drink have a glass of wine soon after you get there and maybe it will calm your jittery nerves some. You're going to be with other women you can talk about all kinds of things. Children (if you have any that helps) clothes, makeup, hairstyles. If you also work you may be able to find some common ground there also. I know how you feel but don't disappoint your hubby. Good luck & try to stay relaxed and take ques from some of the other people there about conversation starters. I hope you can relax and have a good time in spite of your shyness. Remember go talk to your doctor about your problem. The proper medication can turn your life around for the better. LL

It might help with anxiety but it is NOT going to make you into an ''unshy' person. The kind of behaviors you seem to want to see in yourself need to be learned. An anti-anxiety med can help you get over the anxiety part so you can make yourself take actions that are currently not in your comfort zone, but there is no magic pill for social anxiety. It is best and often successfully treated with therapy.

I tried Xanax for my panic attacks in public places, but didn't feel to good with that medication. I now take Clonazepam also known as Rivotril and I feel like I'm back to my old self again. Sure helped me.
Good luck.

Xanax is an anti-anxiety drug so if you have problems interacting with people this should help. Just don't take more than prescribed and don't drink while taking it. Good Luck to you.
