The active ingredient in spicy foods is capsicum, red pepper and this is not water soluble. It's oil soluble. Drinking water is the WORST thing you can do; all it does is spread the heat around and burn you further. Dairy products have oils or fats; use sour cream or milk, even butter to take away the burn. Sugar helps as well. For a really bad burn put sour cream and 1 tsp sugar in your mouth and grind away the burn. And spit don't swallow!
I know this will help. H2O will only hurt. Trust me, I really know!

I love spicy so I don't really want it to go away. But, if it's really burning and I can't stand it anymore, I'd eat a little piece of bread. It's much better than water in putting out the fire.

After you eat something spicy, the best relief is a starch like bread or potato. Milk will work too. These substances absorb the hot oils and remove them from your tongue, mouth, etc.

Drinking water only spreads the heat. Eat a slice of plain bread or drink a small glass of milk. Either will end the burn.

Like most people, milk feels good - but depending on what you ate, it might feel awful in your stomach. Mexican food mixed with milk makes me think of "curdling"..ugh! My friend and I discovered that bananas are a good trick, and it's kind of like having a dessert!

I smile and sit back and savor! But when I was a young warthog, I found that sipping milk afterwards quenched the burn on me tongue.
