You have a chance to improve your credit rating and therefore brighten up your financial future by being patient, a conscious effort, and a personal debt repayment to improve your credit report. The most practical and effective way to truly improve credit is through a number of practical steps designed to help you not only improve your credit rating but also to maintain a decent credit rating once it has improved. No matter how bad your credit is, taking following steps will make it better.

STEP 1: Dispute Inaccurate Information or Frauds in Your Credit Report
STEP 2: Pay all of your bills on time
STEP 3: Reduce the number of credit cards you carry
STEP 4: Avoid bankruptcies, tax liens and collections
STEP 5: Request for Lower Credit Limits
STEP 6: Get a Small Loan or Credit Card with Co-Signer
STEP 7: Get a Secured Credit Card
STEP 8: Periodically Get a Copy of Your Credit Report

Now that you have seen the myths from the people who have answered before me, let me tell you the truth about credit repair. It is just a legitimate as any other business out there if you have chosen a legitimate company. Just like going to a mechanic for your car's repair work you would go to a credit repair service for credit repair.

Can you do it yourself? Yes. But you will have limited success. Once you hit the walls of "Frivilous" or "Confirmed", unless you really know the 340 laws in the Fair Credit Reporting Act, you will be stuck. Any credit restoration company worth their salt will know how to get around these obsticles.

So how do you tell which companies are legit and which ones are not? Read this article. It will explain how to tell the difference. http://EzineArticles.com/?id=446559

Look at their BBB pages. Here are two examples: http://www.saltlakecity.bbb.org/commonreport.html?bid=2000829 (notice how many complaints they have had filed against them) and this one http://www.thebbb.org/commonreport.html?bid=39000730 (notice how few complaints against them)

There is a lot to credit restoration. It is more involved than just writing a few letters saying "I dispute this account information." While you will have some success with that, it will only get you so far. Let the Professionals do it. That is what they are here for.

Most credit repair companies are scams. You can get a free annual credit report from all three major companies once a year. Each of the companies tell you how to dispute items on your report it they are not valid. If they are valid then you can contact the creditor and see if they will remove it from your report if you pay them or work out a deal. Some companies will work with you and accept a deal other will not. My best advise is to not use a credit repair service especially those who claim they can fix your credit for you - if you have bad credit you have bad credit and about all they do is dispute items so it raises your score for a few days and that is all.

Credit repair is something you do over time. You just pay your bills on time and pay off all credit cards and avoid using them. I wouldn't go to anyone to repair your credit, it isn't worth it, just deal with the cards you were dealt.
