Columbus was one of the greatest seamen in the history of the world. Any competent sailor could have reached America by sailing west long enough, but it's unlikely that any others could have found their way back to Spain or could have returned to the same island on later voyages.

Columbus had great moral and physical courage. Again and again he faced mutinous sailors, armed rebels, frightful storms, and fighting Indians.

Christopher Columbus had a mystic belief that God intended him to sail the Atlantic Ocean in order to spread Christianity. He said his prayers several times daily.

Columbus wrote what he called a Book of Prophecies, which is a compilation of passages Columbus selected from the Bible which he believed were pertinent to his mission of discovery.

What a person believes is what determines his interpretation of life and history and inspires his vision and purpose in life. Columbus's own writings prove that he believed that God revealed His plan for the world in the Bible, the infallible Word of God. Columbus believed that he was obeying the mission God staked out for his life when he set sail west across the Atlantic Ocean.

Columbus's voyage to America ranks among history's most important events. It led to lasting contacts between Europe and America, and it opened new windows. To few men in modern history does the world as we know it owe so great a debt as to Christopher Columbus.

I hope this helps!

Algebra comes from the early Babylonians at around 540 BC.

What does it matter if the word algebra is from an Arabic word. They didn't discover algebra. Why should someone get credit for a contribution to mathematics for just naming a field 1360 years after it was discovered.

Lost: Wouldn't it be something if Muslims and Christians could join their scientific expertise together and lay-down their prejudices for one another? Muslims have contributed much to science, as you have rightfully, illustrated. Christianity has their contributors too i.e. Von Braun, Bohr, Carver, etc. (there are a lot more) but you get my gist ! It makes you wonder, as if there were some "Force" in the Universe devising a successive plan.

I don't think the superstition one was raised encourages scientific discovery. Most discoveries have been made over the active objections of a reactionary religion. Men who were part of a Christian culture would of course include Newton (gravity, most of basic physics), Pascal (probability, statistics), Liebnitz (along with Newton for calculus), etc. But that is not a product of their nominal religion, but rather a product of their genius and willingness to set their religion's dogma to one side in the search for truth.

Take a look at George Washington Carver, the father of organic chemistry (not sure if he is really but he should be!) Many of our foods, dyes, etc are all based on his work.

Benjamin Franklin, Pascal, De Carte, along many others were Christians.

This is a good overview. I think the most important are Roger Bacon and Francis Bacon, both in their own way responsible for what we now call the scientific method.
