I have a male Chihuahua and I am having him neutered on Thursday. I am nervous to have him put under, and he also has to have a tooth pulled. I am scared since the last time he had shots his neck swelled and had to go to the vet for a shot. We take excellent care of Hercules and he is truly pampered and the love of my life. I don't want anything bad to happen to him but since he is "marking" everything in sight the vet suggested that we go ahead...what do you think and what are the risks?

Hercules is a 4.8 pound Toy Applehead Chihuahua ~ black/tan I have pictures on my 360 if ya wanna see...

I am a veterinarian. It is not dangerous at all to have him neutered... a neuter on such a small dog is a very quick procedure, and he will be under anesthesia for a brief period of time. With anesthesia, vets generally run pre-anesthetic bloodwork to check organ function before anesthesia. This can help predict any possible (unlikely) problems. The vaccine reaction that your dog had is something that is impossible to predict and somewhat common. It is also easily resolved with the "shot" that you went back to your vet to get. Please do not let a little vaccine reaction (allergic reaction) scare you away from making sure your dog gets the appropriate medical care... it is much healthier for your dog to be neutered, and will definitely help the scent-marking.

Neutering is a routine proceure and he should be fine. If you trust your vet, then you shouldn't worry. I have never seen anything go wrong in a neuter. Since he's so small, they will probably take extra precautions putting him under. As long as the vets are experienced and know what they're doing, everything should go great. Good luck.

first, the dog should be neutered by ur vet, and if possible, the tooth pulled by a dog dentist(yes, they exist!). they shouldn't be done under the same anesthetic(at the same time). neutering is very important. add on- You shouldn't spoil ur Chihuahua- they are extremely intelligent dogs, and when spoiled, they dont get to show their full intelligence potential-think about entering him and yourself into an obediance training class. PS- dont try to keep him that wieght- they can grow and gain weight normally- feed him what he wants, when he wants it, and keep him in a good excercise routine. this is from a Chihuahua owner.

Neutering procedures are very safe these days, and your vet has probably done hundreds of them. You will be happy you did it when it's over.

Talk with your vet about the swelling that occured when he had his shots, especially if this is a different vet. He needs to know anything like that.

he will be ok. I had my 12.5 lb chinese crested neutered at 9 weeks, and he was just 3 lbs. I was terrified! he was fine though.

It is much safer to neuter him. He will also be less dominant, though dont expect all of the marking to leave. Toy dogs are so beyond difficult to completly house break. mine will mark everywhere other than my car and house (thank god!)

Also, my dog swells up everytime he gets shots especailly the rabies one. The first time that totally freaked me out!

Please neuter him. It is really in the best interest of the dog/breed/dog in general. He sounds sooooo cute! I love chihueys!

Don't worry, the operation is a very simple procedure. Only takes minutes long. The anesthesia is what some dogs have problems with but it is so rare that most dogs come through with flying colors.

You can, but for her sake, wait until her heat is over. It is usually more expensive because the surgery is more difficult. When she is in heat there is more blood flow to the uterus so there is more possibility for bleeding. Plus, because of the increased blood flow to the uterus, the surgery takes longer and requires her to be under anesthesia longer. The vet should place an IVcatheter to give her IV fluids during her surgery to help keep her blood pressure up whether or not it is during her heat. Wait a week after her heat is over to have her spayed.

If you were gonna be doing it yourself, quite dangerous for both you and your Chihuahua... Otherwise, with a vet doing it, no problem.

Neutering rarely has complications. He will be fine. The hardest part will be keeping him calm and quiet the days after surgery.

With any breed or operation there is a risk, but neutering is fairly routine, he will be fine.
